Pickleball gifts
Last reviewed September 2026 · prices re-checked and the year refreshed every September
The safest pickleball gifts are the things a player uses up: a dozen outdoor balls (about $35), a three-pack of overgrips (about $9), and edge guard tape (about $8). If they play on public courts, court time or a lesson beats any object. Buy a paddle only if you know their current paddle's weight, grip size, and core thickness, or if they are a beginner who does not own one yet.
This is the gift guide for pickleball players written by people who sell nothing. Every product below is named from its manufacturer's own page, fetched on September 23, 2026, with the list price on that date. We have not tested these products, and there are no discount codes here (Amazon links are marked as paid links; how we handle that). Where a rule decides whether something is regulation, the 2026 USA Pickleball rulebook is cited.
Should you buy a pickleball paddle as a gift?
Every gift guide leads with paddles because paddles are where the money is. Players choose paddles by feel, over weeks, and a paddle that is half an ounce heavier or a grip size larger than the one they play with will sit in a closet. The decision comes down to what you can find out.
You want to give a paddle to someone who already plays.
It depends on whether you can read their current paddle's weight, grip circumference, and core thickness, which are printed on the paddle's listing and usually on the paddle itself. If you can, a paddle in the same weight class, grip size, and thickness is a safe upgrade. If you cannot, skip the paddle and buy what they use up. A beginner with no paddle is the exception: any midweight paddle on the USA Pickleball approved list works, and approval is what makes it legal for sanctioned play.
What pickleball players use up
These are the gifts that get used within a season, because the player was going to buy them anyway. Prices are the manufacturer's list price on September 23, 2026.
Outdoor balls
A dozen Franklin X-40 outdoor balls (paid link) list at $34.99 on Franklin's site (a 100-ball bulk pack is $219.99). Franklin describes the X-40 as USA Pickleball approved and the official ball of the US Open Pickleball Championships; it has 40 holes and weighs 26 grams. The Onix Dura Fast-40 (paid link) is the other common outdoor ball: a four-pack lists at $12.99 in yellow or neon green, and Onix calls it the official ball of the Senior Pro Tour.
One thing to check first: buy the ball their group already plays. The rulebook requires the maker's name on every approved ball (Rule 3.C.4), so the brand is printed on the balls in their bag. Balls with larger holes are customarily used indoors and balls with smaller holes outdoors, per the rulebook's own figure, although every approved ball is legal in either place (Rule 3.C.1). An approved ball has 26 to 40 holes and weighs between 0.78 and 0.935 ounces under USA Pickleball's Equipment Standards Manual.
Overgrips
An overgrip is the thin wrap that goes over the handle and gets replaced when it turns slick. Wilson's Pickleball Pro Overgrip three-pack (paid link) lists at $9.00, each grip 31 inches long. Replacing grip wrap is one of the few paddle alterations the rulebook allows (Rule 3.D.6.h), so a tournament player can use it without a second thought.
Edge guard tape
Paddles scrape the court on low balls, and edge guard tape is what takes the damage. Selkirk's Protective Edge Guard Tape (paid link) lists at $8 for three strips, in 15, 20, and 30 mm widths. Adding or replacing edge guard tape is allowed (Rule 3.D.6.a), with one limit worth knowing: tape on the paddle face may not run more than half an inch inside the edge (Rule 3.D.7).
A cleaning block, if their paddle is raw carbon
Raw carbon fiber paddle faces, the matte woven black ones, collect ball residue. Selkirk's Raw Carbon Fiber Cleaning Block two-pack (paid link) lists at $10 and is labeled for raw carbon faces only. If their paddle face is glossy or painted, skip this one; it is a $10 gift that only works on one kind of paddle.
What pickleball players carry
Paddle cover. JOOLA's neoprene cover (paid link) lists at $19.95 and comes in three shapes (standard, elongated, and a wider Agassi cut), which is the catch with covers in general: they are shape-specific. Buy the cover made by the brand of their paddle, or ask which shape they play.
Ball tube. Gamma's Pickleball Ball Tube (paid link) lists at $17.00, holds 12 balls, telescopes from about 19 to 35 inches, and has a fence hook on the cap. Anyone who has bent over for the eleventh ball of a drill session will understand this gift at once.
Bags. A bag is the most-listed gift in every guide and the hardest to get right, because it depends on what they carry and how they get to the court. Recommendation: if you go there, buy the bag their paddle brand makes, and only if you have seen what they lug around now.
What pickleball players play on
A portable net. For the player with a driveway and no court nearby, a regulation-size portable net is the gift that creates court time. The A11N Core 22 ft Pickleball Net (paid link) lists at $99.99, with a coated steel frame at 20 pounds, and A11N states it meets regulation size: 36 inches high at the posts and 34 inches at the center.
"Regulation size" has a definition. Under the 2026 rulebook, the posts sit 22 feet apart (Rule 3.B.2), the net runs at least 21 feet 9 inches between them (Rule 3.B.3), and the top sits 36 inches high at the sidelines (Rule 3.B.6) and 34 inches at the center (Rule 3.B.7). A net sold as "22 ft regulation" is matching those four numbers. A net sold as "portable pickleball net" with no width stated may not be.
Court time and lessons. Recommendation: for a player who already has a full bag, this is the gift. A lesson with a certified coach, a clinic, or a tournament entry fee is spent on the thing they actually want more of. Prices vary by area and club, so ask where they play.
A USA Pickleball membership. The governing body's Challenger membership is $12 a year and makes the holder eligible for sanctioned tournaments, including Nationals, with a free sleeve of Franklin X-40 balls for new members; the Champion tier is $60 with partner discounts. USA Pickleball's membership page does not offer a gift option, so this one is a sign-up in their name rather than a box under the tree.
The novelty pile
Socks, mugs, ornaments, "dink responsibly" shirts, paddle-shaped earrings. Every guide carries them, every retailer sells 100 of them, and they are fine as a second gift. Common practice among players: one novelty item a year is a joke, the second is a mug collection. If you want the gift to say "pickleball" and still get used, a dozen balls in their group's brand says it louder.

Pickleball gifts for him, for her, for women, for men
It is the same list. Balls, grips, tape, court time, and a net do not have a gender, and the searches for "pickleball gifts for him" and "for her" land on the same products with a different photo. The two categories that genuinely split by person, shoes and apparel, are size-and-fit purchases that this page does not try to make for you. Buy those with a receipt, or buy a Pickleball Central gift card (paid link) and let them.
What not to buy
Recommendation, all four from the paddle logic above. A paddle without the three specs. A "pickleball set" from a big-box store, which typically pairs a net with no stated width and paddles that are not on the approved list, so nothing in the box is regulation. Indoor balls for someone who plays outside, or the reverse: check the balls in their bag. And a second novelty item; the first one was the joke.
Under the official rule
- Rule 3.B.2, 3.B.3, 3.B.6, 3.B.7 net posts 22 feet apart, net at least 21 feet 9 inches long, 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches at the center: what "regulation size" means on a portable net.
- Rule 3.C.1 every approved ball is acceptable for indoor or outdoor play; the rulebook figure notes larger holes are customary indoors and smaller holes outdoors.
- Rule 3.C.4 an approved ball must carry the manufacturer or supplier name, which is how you read the brand off the balls in their bag.
- Rule 3.D.1 for sanctioned play a paddle must be on the USA Pickleball approved paddle list; the list is the gift-giver's check for a beginner's paddle.
- Rule 3.D.6.a, 3.D.6.h, 3.D.7 adding or replacing edge guard tape and grip wrap are allowed alterations; tape on the face may not extend more than half an inch inside the edge.
- Rule 18.B.2 in tournament play, shoes must have soles that do not mark or damage the court; the rulebook says nothing else about footwear.

Related questions
Should you buy a pickleball paddle as a gift?
Only if you can read three things off their current paddle: weight, grip circumference, and core thickness. Match those and you are safe. If you cannot, buy what they use up instead. The one exception is a new player with no paddle, who needs any USA Pickleball approved paddle in the midweight range.
What is a good pickleball gift for a beginner?
A first lesson or a few hours of court time, then a dozen approved balls. A beginner does not yet know what they like in a paddle, so a midweight approved paddle in the $60 to $100 range is fine, but a lesson teaches them what to want. USA Pickleball's $12 Challenger membership adds a free sleeve of balls.
Are pickleball gift cards a good gift?
Yes, when the player is picky about gear, which is most players past their first year. Pickleball Central's cards have no expiration date and redeem in the US only. A gift card is the one gift that lets them pick the paddle you should not pick for them.
Do pickleball players need special shoes?
The rulebook only requires soles that do not mark or damage the court (Rule 18.B.2, tournament play). Common practice: players wear court shoes, tennis or pickleball, because running shoes are built for forward motion and this game moves sideways. Shoes are a size and fit purchase, so gift them with a receipt.
What are pickleball stocking stuffers under $15?
Three overgrips (about $9), edge guard tape (about $8), a carbon cleaning block (about $10), or a four-pack of outdoor balls (about $13). All four get used within a season, which is more than most gifts in this price range can say.
What do you get a pickleball player who has everything?
Time on court. Book a lesson with a certified coach, pay for a clinic, or cover their tournament entry. A $12 Challenger membership makes them eligible for sanctioned tournaments if they are not already. Objects are hard to buy for a full bag; hours are not.
